Step or Jump?

Before I disappeared for a while I made the leap of purchasing a new sewing machine. I fell for some bells and whistles. The machine I had been using was serviceable, but I bought it to test my re-commitment to sewing. It passed the test but was lacking some essentials in my mind. So, I took the plunge and got a new machine.

The machine came with a class to learn how to use it. Great, I thought. Well, when I entered the class and was with other people who had a machine similar to mine or even more advanced and the first twenty minutes was spent talking about needles for the machine, I wanted to scream. In my mind, if you spend the kind of money these machines cost, and don’t know how to choose the correct sewing machine needle, you need to have your head examined. Why, oh why, were we listening to a lecture on needles of all things. I want to know how to use some of the presser feet, the settings, the features that make this machine worth the splurge and will ease my sewing.

Suffice it to say that I was disappointed with the two hours spent learning. Sure, I now know a few shortcuts that would have taken me a while to learn on my own. But I don’t know enough about this machine. Knowing myself as I do, I may never know its true capabilities because I will most likely continue to power through projects rather than take the time to experiment with its features.

How do you approach learning your new machine or other tools? Are you a step-by-step person or a jump-right-in-person?
