On the Road Again

Each time I travel to Wisconsin one of the stops I have to make if I am anywhere near Milwaukee is at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilt and Fiber Arts. This little museum is a must see and worth going out of your way for.

I first learned about the museum from the recommendation of a fiber artist a friend and I met by happenstance several years ago. Since then, it has become a place I have come to enjoy and learn so much from.

This visit featured “Warmth, Comfort, Style, Fashion & Fine Art: Quilts from the Pilgrim/Roy Collection.” Pilgrim and Roy have collected more than 1,500 quilts and have led the way in appreciating quilts as works of art. They were gallery owners, antique dealers, and trained artists who looked at quilts as expressions of art, which led to them collecting more than 1,500 quilts at one point.

The thirty quilts presented here are designs you may be familiar with, Log Cabin, School House, Irish Chain, and others. I entered the museum thinking this might be quite ordinary, not much new or different. I could not have been more wrong. From the moment I walked in it was clear that the craftsmanship, the eye for detail, and the precision with which these quilts were sewn was a feast for the eyes. I learned so much about the history of quilts and was inspired to try some ‘new to me’ ways of quilting. Once again, the museum exceeded expectations.
