Machine quilting on my home sewing machine sometimes feels like wrestling an alligator. No matter how carefully I approach it, the quilt seems determined to fight back.

I’ve approached this in a few different ways. I bought the clamps, the spray adhesive and other accouterments to make the process easier. Well, it isn’t easy.
A doll quilt is simple– it fits beautifully under the throat of the machine, is easily maneuvered and comes out perfectly. Larger quilts, not so much. There are mistakes galore: bunches in the backing, a tuck here or there. It’s frustrating to work so hard to still have so many mistakes appear.
I am trying to be more zen about it, but it bugs me. Plain and simple.
So, I found someone who does longarm quilting and have taken the leap. It’s not cheap but I’m hoping- fingers-crossed- that the results will be worth it.
How do you quilt your quilts– by hand, on your sewing machine, or with a long arm?
If you’ve struggled with machine quilting like I have, what helped you the most?
