The final day of the Gee’s Bend Quilting Retreat was a beehive of activity. It was filled with last minute additions, finishing touches- hand and machine quilting-, and new projects being started even though time was running out.
‘Show and Tell’ was a memorable part of the last day. It was a feast for the eyes and the spirit. Quilters shared their work, walking us through their choices of design, color and fabric. They paused to acknowledge one another, grateful for shared knowledge, encouragement, and generosity.

I was struck at how easily beginners and experienced quilters worked side by side. There were people at this retreat who had never sewn or quilted before, those returning after years away, and experienced life-long quilters all creating together. You couldn’t tell who was who. Curiosity, willingness to try new things, and openness to new ideas were all a big part of these few days. We each had something to share and to learn.
I’ve waited a long time to come to this retreat.
Gee’s Bend and the Gee’s Bend Quilting Collective are important parts of our country’s history. These quilts are artistry passed down through generations. They reflect lives lived with resourcefulness and vision and have finally been given the recognition they deserve.
To witness this tradition and be in their presence is a gift. Thank you to Mary Ann Pettway, Chinna Pettway, and the quilters of Gee’s Bend for your artistry, your generosity, and your willingness to share your work and your stories.
