Gee’s Bend Here I Come

As I’ve returned to sewing and quilting I’ve spent time imagining what might lie ahead. Some things have gone according to plan, other times I’ve been surprised.

I know I can  sew and follow a pattern. I’ve got that hands down. I love to learn and what is most exciting is learning something new. I enjoy taking classes from people with more experience. Recently, I’ve practiced making precise half-square triangles, experimenting with Dresden Plate blocks and creating designs with free-motion embroidery.

This week I am heading off to learn from women whose quilting traditions have been passed down through generations.

The women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, have been sewing quilts since the 19th century. What began as a necessity- to keep their families warm- has evolved into an artform recognized and appreciated around the world. Gee’s Bend quilts are known for their bold improvisational designs, which often look quite different from the quilt patterns many of us are used to seeing or making.

My goal is to learn to improvise, and to create designs that are different from those I’ve sewn until now. I hope to experience not only the sewing techniques behind Gee’s Bend quilting but also the history and spirit that shaped this remarkable tradition.

I can’t imagine and can’t wait!

I will be sharing more here and on my Instagram account about my time at the Gees Bend Quilt Retreat.
