The Stash Revealed

This post is a part of the Stash Stories, a series about fabric, creativity, and the stories behind what we save. Each post explores a piece of my fabric stash- where it came from, why it matters, and what it’s teaching me about making, memory, and possibility.

Last week, I shared a handful of homespun fabric pieces and asked what you thought they might become. Today is the big reveal.

I began with a plan, which shifted as I sewed. The first one is a bit different than the last, though I doubt the small shifts I made as I sewed would be noticed.

What began as a small idea became a production line, cutting, sewing, trimming seams, ironing, more sewing and inserting the drawstring as the finishing touch. Once I began I thought of more and more people who might enjoy this midwinter pick-me-up. My stash dwindled even further.

Fabric doesn’t gain meaning by being saved, that happens when it is being used. Even the pieces I hesitated to cut become more valuable once they had a purpose. And, as a wise friend once said, is the person being gifted a handmade item from my stash or otherwise, worthy of this gift? Will they enjoy it, appreciate it, and understand not only the time involved, but the heart and energy that went into creating it? That is always the hope.
