Learning to Sew Again

When I found myself staring down the throat of my “golden” years, I decided to start sewing again. I’d always enjoyed it but rarely had the time—working life took over. I bought a new machine since my old one, nearly forty years old, needed servicing every time I tried to use it.

I began teaching myself to sew all over again, just like when I was a little girl. Luckily, it is similar to riding a bike and many of the skills weren’t totally lost, though they were a bit rusty. Sewing has become a much-needed creative outlet. I’ve been designing quilts inspired by ones I’ve seen in shops, museums, and online, and I’ve discovered that what I love most is the design process—choosing fabrics and playing with how they come together. I often begin in one place and end up in a totally different one, practicing the art of discovery.

Sewing has brought me real pleasure, and it’s inspired me to share both my stories, my quilts, and other smaller projects with others. If you’ve rediscovered a creative passion in your life I’d love to hear about it.
